Speciality Custom Projects

Whilst working on a bathroom, the lady of the house asked us if we could do something with an un-sightly alcove in her bedroom. We created a beech ply (requested by the customer) custom shelving and hanging rail built in wardrobe, with some oak doors to close it all off, and finished it with Liberian Black Bison Furniture Wax. Lots of storage space where there once was none. Very happy customer.

Unused space can be annoying, but filling it with something interesting was what this couple wanted; something that followed the curve of the sofa but was unobtrusive, beautiful, and useful. We used solid oak worktops, and mdf templates and flush trim router bits to create a subtle curved shelf, supported by legs to create different storage spaces, and classy brass inserts to feed the electrics up onto the shelf. Finished in Oslo PolyX Oil, and very much enjoyed and used.

We were asked by this family to create a bar in an alcove of the living room to help them entertain and enjoy relaxed evenings in front of the fire. We started with the space from scratch, built it out with a strong frame and moisture resistant mdf (thank you Arbor Timber), pitch blue cabinets from Howdens Belmont, Durham, and a built in fridge, and finished off with a solid oak countertop, and solid oak shelves for bottles and glasses, treated with Oslo PolyX Oil. There were some bespoke panels to create to maintain access to wiring and suchlike, and then treating and painting so the bar blended into the living room. Sláinte.

At the top of the stairs on the landing, can you create a bookcase in an un-used bit of space? No problem. Bespoke from scratch, with all materials from Arbor Timber, Langley Moor, Durham, and classy stainless steel shelf supports, with a little electrical jiggery-pokery to move a light, this space now boasts a great collection of books. Finished with Liberian Black Bison Furniture Wax.

Completely bespoke, with Blum "soft close, touch to open" runners, and made of quality birch ply (thanks Arbor Timber), these built in drawers made a messy, unsatisfying space eminently more useable and more efficient, and made the hall in this house look super clean and tidy.

No standard gates would fit in the gaps between this customer’s garden walls. We hand made these gates using quality treated pine (thanks Arbor Timber) with mortise and tenon joints, and domino-ed upper short rails, with cast iron hardware, and for good measure replaced the trellis in the garden of next door too.

In Durham City, we worked with a couple with a vision to make something beautiful out of a problem. To remedy a sagging ceiling we constructed a 5inch by 4inch green oak frame (materials provided by the wonderful folk at Arbor Timber, Langley Moor, and the planning help of their joiner Tom Heseltine), constructed with chunky mortise and tenon joints, and firmly fixed under the ceiling, and finished with Oslo PolyX Oil. It will still be there decades from now!
The couple were so happy with this idea, they also asked us to re-model their bannister with the same materials. We took out the existing spindles and newels and replaced them with a similar green oak frame, joined with mortise and tenons, and 2 1/2 inch green oak spindles, to mirror the ceiling support, and create rather a grand entrance to the house. Very pleased with this one. A real virtue out of a problem.
